discuss...............

While MCR is easily the next most popular band on Cydonia (at todays date of writing and purely on number of posts in the MCR thread compared to other bands) the 'majority' of folks on mu and muselive will rip into MCR at any given oppertunity.

Why?

On the Cydonia myspace the number of friends who have MCR in their profile is astonishingly high if you compare it with mu or Muse Live posters who will be negative about MCR. I'd expect the ratio to be smaller based purely on what I see on those two forums and opinions expressed

I know people on here adore MCR as much as they adore Muse, so I'm struggling to see the problem. Enlighten me please.

Is it to do with Muse supporting MCR in the USA (the Muse fans cant hack the thought of Muse being a support band) or is it something else?

The average (and I use the term loosly) Muse fan doesn't like MCR, but MCR fans on the whole adore Muse.

Please dont give me a 'coz MCR are shit' answer, its the lazy option. I want elaboration and articulation please

I have several ideas (all of which conflict )

1. Maybe it is a thing that isn't solely Muse-fan related, that perhaps MCR are simply the marmite of the music world - love them or hate them. In my opinion Muse are not that kind of band and there is more of a gradient there.

2. I would say that it is a bit of a stretch to categorise music tastes within other groups (eg the MCR fans loving Muse) because actually most people are fairly odd, and so the question itself may not be quite right.

3. I think that the people who you find voicing the opinion that they hate MCR are probably a small percentage of the people, and those with a particular kind of personality.

im more inclined to think its the whole "emo" label! if you think of any of these types of bands, Fall Out Boy, The Academy Is, Cute Is What We Aim For, theyre all just dismissed into one huge emo category and as soon as you hear that word, that is where the interest seems to stop! It also doesnt help with Matt making snide comments either, because its like saying that the "Elitist Feel" of the muse fans are correct.

I think the whole american thing was such a good platform for muse, My Chem sell out a shit load of Arenas and therefore expose Muse to new fans over there, but the way Muse fans have been acting is unforgivable, and My Chem wont be touring anymore with Muse! this kind of thing makes me so ashamed to say im a Muse fan, music is music, if you hate it then leave after Muse, but dont go giving the headlining band shit at their own show, its just not right!

sorry, but its really how i feel

good discussion, its what i was looking for :smt045

I used MCR as my subject because out of all the 'emo' bands they get the most comments. FoB, CIWWAF don't seem to get as many comments.

I'm a firm believer in liking what you like irrespective of label/scene/genre but recent threads, especially on mu have been quite negative and it got me wondering, thats all, curiosity.

I like Hannah's 'marmite' quote, Muse are like that I suppose, people either love or hate them.

I was just wondering why people had such a reaction. The general answer is 'coz they're shit' and i was wondering if there was any other reason, apart from 'not being someones cup of tea'

musical taste is a very personal thing and i just generally can't understand why people can't respect someones taste without being negative about who they like. The most relevant example to use here on Cydonia was the Muse v MCR debate, but it could equally be applied to Muse v Radiohead debate which is discussed with equal passion on mu for example. there are many combinations that could be used, I chose the most popular one at this moment in time

I'm sorry Ali but I am one of those people.

To me MCR are a band that are there for fashion not for music.
Its highly stereotypical and I am strongly into individuality, I don't like what they convey.

I believe MCR get the most stick mainly because they are the main root of what kicked off the "emo" phase..

As for Fall Out Boy I feel the same way about them, definately there for fashion they make themselves appealing through their music videos, rather than their actual music.. I don't agree with this at all.

If you want to be known as a musician, write songs with messages that mean something to you or something you want others to know about and deliver them like you mean it, not repetitive stereotypical drivel and cover it up with fancy outfits and catchy videos. Its there for young people to go "ooooohhh!!"

As for Muse.. they are the total opposite.. they are hard to categorise into genre, forever changing their style, just looking at them they don't strike as anything that is stereotyped, therefore they appeal to a much wider audience, mainly those who like them for their "talent" which is perhaps why most fans don't like MCR.

As for MCR fans I don't think they appeal to as a wider audience.. I know you like them Ali but to me I just have images of 15 year old girls, in those horrible leggings you get and scruffy hair cuts.. lol..

Sorry I could have come up with something better but I'm feeling rather tired right now

You see I dont see MCR as emo, even though they have been put in this category. Personally I think they are more alternative rock, which is also where I would put Muse. I would put perhaps FOB and some of the others in the Emo cat though.

At the last MCR gig there were people of all ages, and not just your typical 15 year old screaming girly (though there were many of these - but that is not just isolated to MCR - I have been to see Westlife a few times  and there are far more screaming middle aged women there than young girls at an MCR gig!!!), there were younger people and many much much older than me! which to be honest compares with people at a Muse gig.

I am also a believer of liking what you like, and who cares what category they are in. I have an eclectic taste in music which ranges from Marilyn Manson through to Girls Aloud. I dont care if people dont like the music I like.

And if people dont want to see a certain band perform then dont go see em frankly rather than shout abuse, chuck things etc.

Yeah I definately judge music on what it sounds like rather than its genre I found so very few people do this. I hate stereotyping its nonsense.

But I personally think MCR sound god awful. Though nowhere near as bad as Good Charlotte's new single, what trash

but this was my point with the Muse fans! if you hate My Chem then why on earth would you stay around to see a band that you hate, unless its to heckle and cause trouble? why cant people just be allowed to like who they like without being made to feel guilty!? i think these fans that wanted to shout and hit and josstle the My Chem fans should have just left after muse finished their set! its safe to assume that this wont happen again though, they wont tour together again, its just not worth it

What, is that what people did?

Well yeah that is pretty pointless and ignorant doing that seeing as it is an actual MCR gig not a Muse one people were also complaining that Muse played for 45 minutes which I think is a reasonable amount of time for a support act bit silly really

I think Thursday played for around 40 mins at the last MCR gig, so 45 is deffo reasonable.

There is nowt so funny as folk I suppose.

i have it from some friends that were there, that the muse fans just basically made it really difficult for the My Chem fans to have a good time, shouting and heckling and pushing etc, i dunno, i just think its not right, we all have personal tastes and we should be allowed to enjoy them, but i think My Chem have learned their lesson and theyll take someone else on tour next time, this hasnt worked out at all. shame really, it could have been really good for both bands! they really are such different bands though, and i would never have though of putting them on tour together

Its these reports that have prompted me to open this discussion really.

How would Muse fans feel if it was the other way round and the MCR fans were giving the Muse fans the level of hassle that's going round? I bet the Muse fans would be pretty pissed off. Some people need to remember that.

Treat others as you wish to be treated.
