Friday 13th (not the movie)

Ok, so seeing as tomorrow is Friday the 13th, I thought it would be fun if we all put down what superstitions we actually follow.

Or what superstitions are in your local area, as we have a few international peeps here

*I DON'T walk under ladders EVER! I don't care if I look super stupid trying to avoid it, I just don't do it!

*I read once something about putting your right shoe on first(can't even remember what it was for!) and now I HAVE to put my right shoe on first, if I forget then I have to take off my left shoe and rub my foot on the carpet and start again!!...ok so that is more ocd than actual superstition..well it's my superstition!

*If I see a magpie I hit the person next to me and say pass on sorrow!

ok, your go
wildflower

ok, im the same as you with the ladders Karen, i would rather go and walk the long way around if it meant avoiding the ladder!

when i see a magpie i salute and then say "mornin mr magpie" heee ihave no idea where that superstition comes from!

Never put new shoes on a table...ever!

i always put my left shoe on first, its not a superstition though itsjust a thing i have, everything has to be on the left, if i make a cup of coffee my mug has to the left mug, i sleep on the left hand side of the bed etc.

thats all i can think of for now
Northern-Star

Oh I remembered one more, Stephen always laughs at me for this one. If I am using salt, like adding it to pasta to cook, then I pour it into my hand use it for cooking and whateve I have left over I throw over my shoulder!
I think it was something to do with warding off evil spirits:twisted: but I may have it slightly wrong, but like with everything else, I now have to always do it
wildflower

oh yeah karen, i do that too,and if i use all the salt in my hand, i have to go and grab some more so i can chuck it over my left shoulder, but i always make sure im stood next to the sink, so it doesnt go all over the place happy friday 13th
Ham of the Problematique

That shoe thing is a Muslim custom I think Karen. I don't really have any superstitions... not that I can think of anyway.
hystericali

magpies, that's about it really for me.

After me saying 'I don't believe in Friday 13th' I had a really awful day yesterday. My computer chair broke in half while I was sitting on it and I fell down and hurt my back, and stuff has got worse with my non-boyfriend-person! Stupid day.
wildflower

arrgh well at least friday 13th is over now, and things can only get better
Northern-Star

That sucks hannah

Carroll, do you know why you do the salt thing? Is it just something you know of and do it? I think my mam did it or maybe my granny
wildflower

yeah its the same for me, just passed down through the generations i think! its one of those old wives tales isnt it? i darent mess with old wives tales though cause ya just never know.....
Northern-Star

yeh Stephen is always taking the piss outta me when I do these things! haha

I got my diploma printed and signed on Friday the 13th, hooray.

I don't care about superstitions much but there are a few. I try not to walk under ladders too, also whenever I say something bad (for example shout "die _____ !" at someone) I knock wood, pretend to spit over my shoulder three times, etc. so that it wouldn't happen. And of course I can't shake off the ol' good black cat superstition.
wildflower

hey well done on the diploma

how could i forget about the black cat one?? also, i pretty much dont beleive in God really, but if i do anything bad, or i say anything mean, then im very God fearing and really do think that hes gonna hurt me, how does that work? how can you believe on the one hand, but not on the other? hmmm

Thanks

And about the fear - maybe you just believe in karma or something.
wildflower

yeah i think its probably more Karma as opposed to God, but God is the first "being" that i think of when i know ive done wrong hehe!
Northern-Star

I always touch wood too, if I do say something that may jinx me, like I dunno, think something bad lol

Over here in Iceland they "believe" in elves/the hidden people. They live in or under these huge rocks that are dotted around the country. So, if you are going to be building a new house or a road and you come across a huge rock, you have to leave it there, or bring in a pyshic and they "ask" the hidden people is it ok for them to be moved, sometimes they say yes other times no and roads have to be moved! There are so many stories of rocks being moved and all the machines for building stopping, or people getting injured. The most common thing is if it is at someones house, the house going on fire if they have moved the rock!! You see perfectly good farm land going to waste as they wont move the rocks! I'm sure there is a good website about it, its fascinating!
wildflower

wow, thats a pretty amazing story, i love that kind of superstition, and it must be such a strong one for even land owners and property buyers not to go ahead with their buildings if the rock needs to be moved!!! if you find a website Karen, can you post the link? id like to read about that

Not superstitious at all me

Thanks for the links, Northern-Star. Am reading them now and then will pass on to my Iceland-obsessed friend.
Northern-Star

cool I actually know two girls who are from Lithuania who used to work here in Iceland They were studying in Vilnius but from the country somewhere
After8

Pretty cool. I have a friend who speaks Icelandic, we performed in a local contemporary arts centre cafe about a month ago, it was an Icelandic evening, we played and he recited poetry in Icelandic : )
Northern-Star

wow thats pretty cool! I don't even speak Fluent Icelandic!! lol

Last summer we had the Lithuanian eurovision singers play here at a summer culture weekend, they were very funny Most of the crowd was from Lithuania and my friends too. They also had a photographic exhibition on from the eve of when you came into the European Union

he took off his trousers to sing the Icelandic song from the eurosvision the horrible one by Silvia Nott!
After8

Oh dear : D One of my friends loves Silvia's song but I don't. I don't like Lithuanian one (or Eurovision in general) either. Muse ftw
Northern-Star

of course Eurovision is complete trash, but it offers a lot of things to laugh at

Silvia is in hiding haha The actress hasn't really done anything with her since the eurovision, as she shamed the country! I think she released another album as Silvia, but wasn't doing much press for it.
