News as dramaI´ve noticed a change in the way tv news is presented in the past few years in the UK.
All of the networks seem desperate to have ´breaking news´, ´newsflashes´ etc;in fact, Sky News has 'First for breaking news' as it's motto. But more disturbingly, I feel that coverage of events like Hurricanes Katrina & Rita/9:11 is being treated almost as drama, rather than real-life tragedies. The newsmen/newswomen in the studio always seem to be pressing their on-site reporters for news of deaths - almost as if they actually want the particular tragedy to be heightened, or rather, the drama to be more dramatic.
You can nearly sense the dissapointment that Rita seemed to be less life-threatening than Katrina was...
Tv companies rarely create genuinely good dramatic productions these days, so now real-life events are served to our jaded palates.
Have we really come to this?

yes, I'm afraid we have, Steve
News is no longer presented as 'factual' and 'reported', it is getting to the stage where things are over sensationalised to the point that things that are genuinely disasterous or devastating have lost the 'shock value' they would have had 10 years ago.
That is my opinion, I'll go now

Things are cetainly over sensationalised. They almost seem glad something bad as happened so they can report on it.

Indeed. Though, less people than ever are actually listening to it, according to propah studees done.

Using the example of these murders near Ipswich at the moment, one of my friends parents commented that they don't normally go so in depth into the backgrounds of the victims. I would say that their are two reasons for this.
The first would be because there have been so few developments in the case, the BBC (and others) are trying to kid the public that they are well informed and that progress is being made. The other of course, as Steve said, is to make the entire thing more of a drama.
I know I havn't explained this very well, not being the most eloquent of people, but I hope it at least makes some sense!

I agree with what you say, also, the media hunt out these kind of things ie: serial killer cases..so even though they hadn't fully identified the fifth body until today/last night they were already linking all 5 bodies to the "killer"
For the media it sells much more papers if its a serial killer on the loose, than just one guy.
Then we will have the in depth anaylsis of a serial killers motives..then about prostitution..blah blah until they catch him/her and then we will be bombarded with the court case!!! "Oj Simpson" anyone?
They are just selling fear really.

my friend in the US knows almost more about this case than i do!! its big news everywhere it seems, theres something so dramatically compelling about serial killers, almost a thirst for that kind of detail! everyone wants to know the gory details and see the face of such a crazed killer! i like to keep up on the news, but i feel that if his motives have anything to do with his 15 minutes of fame, then as the story drops from the front pages, then that will be extra motive for him to continue this killing spree! i think really sticking to just the facts would be less motivational!

I can see your point with that, as it always comes up in tv shows, I know they are not to be relied on! lol but it is true..most of these killers love the sttention this brings.
I just saw more updates this morning..the case is horrible and sad though

its not dropping off the tv as such, but now its maybe not the first story that they report on, and that worries me, but at the same time, maybe if he wants more attention he will get careless, that can only be a good thing! i guess these things are always double edged, good in the sense that it can jog peoples memory and maybe help the investigation, but bad in the way that it can encourage nutters and copycats! this world just gets more and more scary
