this is a big one to tackle, and theres sooooo much you can say here.my first thoughts on this subject have always been.....skin colour isn't waht makes you a bad person....it's what in your mind.i sometimes think things have gone tooo far the other way tho...for instance if a man of english ethnic origin were to be attacked by 2 men of asian/chinese/african etc etc origin, it would just reach the headlines as 'MAN BUTALLY STABBED', however if things were the other way round its all over the papers etc as 'A HORRIFIC RACIAL RAMPAGE!!' why is it this way????this is the other annoying thing, you have to be soooo careful with what you say!!i very often hear white teenagers up the local park talking in this london gangster sort of accent with a carribean sort of crap impersination to it(i'm sure we all have) but the minute you say to them....ffs mate, you're not of carribean/ethnic origin, knock it off...they respond with 'u bein racist bu??' and no,k i'm afraid i'm not, i was just making a point!the world has gone racism mad!!the muslims is another so0re subject with me and alot of 'typical british' people i know. it's like this, 5 men try to launch several terroist attacks in the centre of London, they are of asian ethnic background.....all of a sudden britain goes into a racial fit of arresting every muslim with a turban on they see!!!WHY?? that was 5 individuals, and yes...there probably are far more...but not every muslim person is!!
you've then got the bone of contention where social/council rights and racism tie in together.now people may call me racist for this but this is how i've OBSERVED things, it may not be true, this is just what i've noticed/pieced things together.but imigrants come here seeking refuge...fair enough, most are housed temporarily and once they've been working and can afford their own way, move on for themselves.however what annoys me is the illegals coming over, who instantly get housed,fed,watered,electric,gas etc etc (the list goes on)when many of our own people still live this way but our council turn their backs.it's not so much annoyance at the illegal immigrants really, but the council for giving them specail treatment over people of white ethnic background native to this country!!and all because tony blair's a halfwit twat with his head up bush's arse....anyway...thats another point of discussion.my final point on muslim racism which will deem me slightly racist in a lot of your eyes is mosques and their buildings of religion.i'm not being funny but if people of white ethnic background were to immigrate in their thousands to their native homelands...they wouldn't build us churches and cathedrals to worship our god......would they?

i could go on alll day about racism and how i can see where some are coming from yet how they're wrong etc etc...but there's just a few of my points...what does everyone else think?

I've worked with immigrant people a lot in recent years, and they have a pretty awful time over here, at least in terms of work. They're usually badly paid compared to the native workers, and are very lucky if anyone even bothers to try to converse with them. Then there's the 'casual' racism I've mentioned in my post above...

Well I can defniitely relate to this, even though you've put it into an English concept, it is just as present, if not more so, in the States.

I live in Georgia - historic, deep south, civil war rebel, racist & ignorant south.

I'm not sure how knowledgeable you all are about the situation, so I'm going to describe it and explain every little thing so that I can make sure you get the picture here.

During the Civil War there was the Rebel Flag - a sign of the South. It is an oppressive and racist symbol to the very core in most situations. In other contexts it is a part of our 'history' - a history that is comparable to the dark period in Germany. There are people in my hometown, in my area, at my college, on our streets, everywhere who have these Rebel Flags hanging, posted, nailed up, pictures of them, tags on their cars, stickers on their cars, on their clothing, hats, and everywhere imaginable. These people try to make the argument that it is part of their heritage, yet they are extremely racist people. They say that it has nothing to do with slavery or racism, but everything to do with history.

It offends many, many people of african descent and yet these people try to argue that it doesn't offend them. People burn these flags, try to pass laws outlawing them, yet people always bank on "it's part of our history" when in fact, it may be part of our history, but it is a symbol of a period that is very very hurtful to certain demographics.

I absolutely hate these people. They're racist - hate blacks, hispanics, asians, muslims or anyone that looks muslim, hell, even Canadians and French. It is absolutely ridiculous how racist people are here and I hate it. Racist slang is in everyday use and people don't care that it hurts others, everyone is so inconsiderate.

The government tries to fix these kinds of things by putting a thing called "affirmative action" in which means that things like companies, corporations, colleges and universities, clubs, and everything else has a mandatory quota of blacks, hispanics, and everything else.

Basically what I'm saying is that this hatred that white "Americans" have for all the minorities, foreigners, and other non-white, protestant Americans is stupid and far too present. It has even hurt them in the long run because now it's harder for all white people to get jobs and get into selective schools.

Unfortunately, I know what you are talking about(I mean the situation). It;s hard to comprehend when you are a rational thinking person, how people can be so cruel and yet think its not harming anyone.

Just to the part where you mentioned the flag being worn and put on cars and stuff. As you may know, the IRA were/are trying to get the British out of teh North of Ireland and make the country whole again. While pursuing this they used the tricolour flag, the flag of the people of the Rep(south) of Ireland, so of course it is associated with them now.(I know the flag you mean came from that horrible period, whereas they have used our flag and taken it to mean somehting else. Just wanted to mention it)
In the UK, the Union Jack has suffered a similar problem, but I'll let someone from there talk about that, coz I don't know the in's and outs.

Ireland is a terribly racist place, and its my parents and people of their generation who are..its awful really. They just dont know why all these people are going there.. Then you try and say, hang on a minute, isnt Ireland one of the countries with the biggest emmigraters in history? then you realise its not that they care about, its the colour and the "stereotypes" the things they hear from their friends over coffee..noone seems to actually do any research or want to find the truth about why these people are leaving their countries. the world is just awful

The two generations prior to mine are also very bad, my parents aren't so bad as they used to be when they were children, but my grandparents are horrible. My grandad refers to everyone by one racist name or another, he can never just treat them like humans.

But you can't really fight it because that's how they were raised - my great grandfather was in the Ku Klux Klan and he and his brothers probably lynched people during their time.

I was raised racist until I knew better - about age 10 - and now I combat it. I will never allow my children to be exposed to racist comments and ways like I was when I was a child, because they would have no choice but to accept it.

It's a horrible situation here in this cultural wasteland.

Umm.. I thought the comic bit was funny and I agree that films, esp. Hollywood films have some disturbing stereotypes in them. I have to say that I haven't seen most of those films though but as a kid I loved the first Die Hard film. Umm.. but Bruce was a lone star of that one, no? And I also loved Lethal Weapon films. :oops: But my counter argument - in Lethal Weapon, isn't it the black guy who's all conservative with family and kids and nice house, and Mel Gibson is the looney street wise guy? So has this person stereotyped all Holywood films to match his argument?

(Okay, the first ones are probably from the 80s so they surely have some black-white stereotypes in them)

My Ireland related incident happened two weeks ago when my Irish friend was over and we went to a bar for ciders. There this couple, round 40 or so, came to our table and started to have a chat with us. When they heard that my friend is from Ireland, the guy went all "you know, there is one thing I don't like about Ireland, and that's IRA".. and well, my friend doesn't even come from North Ireland, but from the South of Rep of Ireland, so he hasn't really experienced the troubles himself. We tried to explain this to them, but especially the guy was probably just too drunk to take any notice of what you told him. But indeed, people clearly have their ignorant stereotypes... I'm sure I have mine too.. :pale:

And today I had a strange encounter with a foreigner but maybe that doesn't really go here, the story. :silent:

our grandparents generation is the worst....they seem to have forgotten an important fact tho.....during the time when the african people were being slaved in america (we interviened as usual) and brought them over to england.....so grandparents who say 'bloody blacks!!' next time simply say....'well you were the ones who brought them here'

Well, I really think racism appears from the education. It is true that the old generation is more racist than ours but many young people are racist anyway and they exist in any social ranks. So, it mainly depends on the way they communicate, work or are brought with people who don't have the same origins.
France is known as one of the less racist country in the world, it is perhaps true but it is also because this country doesn't have so many nationalities such as in England or America. But problems exist and it has already appeared for about 10 -15 years from the new generation belonging to the north africans who came for the best days of the french economy in the 60's. It is clear that those young people don't have the same opportunities to get a job as the other ones though they are born in France and had a french education.
It seems we tend to turn to a more racist country with the increase of the nationalist party in France. Even Chirac's gouvernment establishes new laws to close our country a bit more and chase the people without cards. Of course, many people react about this because France is considered as the country of 'Liberte, egalite, Fraternite' where all the men are born free and equal in rights.
I just want to thank my parents to have given me this awareness and perspicacity to apprehend the human society and try my best to donate this one to my children, I think they already got it.

When have you heard of the police arresting any muslims? I certainly haven't, and they don't, unfortunately. They're too scared. :roll: Also, what you say about not every muslim, it's practically part of their religion for them (the muslims) to be the highest population on the planet, while us (the 'infidels' they call us) are to be killed. Muslims believe that they are in a higher place, if you like, than anyone of a different race/religion. That is why they choose to kill us and bomb OUR country/ies. :evil:

i just finished reading to kill a mockingbird. my favorite book ever. but i heard some schools have banned it because of tyhe racism in it. i think its a GREAT KICKING-LAURELS BOOK!!!it was great! but sad, and happy! but racist, but full of heroism as well!
