Superheroes united - Manu's book (and Chad's)how megalomaniac of me to open a thread for my book to be..
but hey, julz and Carroll helped me a lot, so I thought well.. why not :p
my new agent asked me for a revised synopsis (the one I'd given her was way too brief) so I rewrote it, and I'm also in the process of amending my work following that review I got (stuff like paragraph indentation, English/US spellings, etc).
Anyways, I've got the new synopsis now. I should send it to her tomorrow or Tuesday at the latest. If anyone is willing to give it a read.. it's short, about a page long;
Heck, i'll post it here. You can tell me what you think.
here it is:
5th of September 2006
9am
The sun was shining. It was a bright and beautiful morning, and I’d just dropped my daughter off at school. It seemed like a normal Tuesday, I was back home, I was going to start working as usual, I’d made myself a cup of coffee… and as I always do, I started the day by checking my email. And among my work stuff and spam emails… I found a mail from my best friend, telling me my boyfriend was dead.
Although what I wrote could be construed as fiction, it is actually based on real events. This book relates an unusual love story between a French woman and an Australian man. Their love story is unusual inasmuch as it takes the form of a 'virtual romance' (blossoming via emails, MSN conversations, forums, etc - the characters never meet face-to-face), which is abruptly cut short, when one of the protagonists dies at the age of 26.
“I’m glad to have you as a friend”
…
“I really enjoy our friendship and I suppose I have developed a bit of a crush on you.”
…
“Yes I have a *crush* on you, and I do feel it’s stronger then a crush, but I do like to take things one day at a time. I just want to be sure of how I feel. And I think it is important not to make this an official relationship over the net, who knows what is ahead of us, what with the distance and all.“
…
“I’ll tell you how I feel about you - I love you, but I feel it is inappropriate to say to you, because you live so far away and I still meant what I wrote in that other mail. If there was a guy to come into your life that'd be fine. I just want you to be happy.”
…
“You know what? Forget what I said, I really don’t want you to meet another girl. Hope you don’t mind me saying that.”
“Don't worry I feel exactly the same and to be honest it’s not going to happen
I have you in my heart, no other girl interests me at all.”
…
“I love you beyond the limits of the universe.”
The book comprises emails, MSN conversations, board posts, etc., which allows me to convey a sense of authenticity and modernism. This is a 21st century romance, with a few twists which I believe set it apart from others.
and here is the advice I got re that synopsis thing. Maybe soome of you guys could tell me if you think I've done my job :The current synopsis is catchy, intriguing, but short.
The synopsis is the first item that a book publisher reads. It must grab their attention. Add more details about the plot and/or events.
Remember you must engage an agent or would-be publisher and leaving him or her virtually breathless with anticipation to begin reading your manuscript. The synopsis is supposed to accomplish this. The synopsis must be written in such a way, that the editor will feel as if they absolutely have to read this manuscript.
Aside from being free of typographical and grammatical errors, a good synopsis should aspire to be much more than a mere rendition of events or a chronology. It should give the reader a sense of why events occur as they do and of who the players are, also show him or her how the pieces of your story connect.
How can you make your synopsis unique, exciting? Start with the main character and his or her crisis. Include snippets of dialogue or quote briefly from the novel itself. Don't neglect to reveal the character's emotions and motivations, those points that explain why a character does something, but keep it brief. If the setting is exotic, inject a taste of it into the synopsis with a brief paragraph. This includes any background information that is absolutely necessary for the reader to understand the story. Build excitement as you near the conclusion of the story summary by using shorter sentences and paragraphs. The synopsis is a sample of your writing; it is a taste of what reading the actual novel will be like, so give it your all.
A synopsis is usually at least one page in length.

hehe nothing megalomaniacal (is that even a word hehe)? about wanting to get some feedback, we all kind of went through the process of this whole thing with you, so its nice to help with the end result too
I actually like your synopsis, because i feel that it doesnt give too much away, i love the opening paragraph, that certainly packs a powerful punch, thats the kind of thing that hooks someones interest!" i also like how youve structured the conversations to go from just friends right through to "love beyond the universe" all this while keeping it pretty short and sweet, my opinion is that its just right sweetie
good luck
