The Arctic JonkeysThese fella's all make up the youngest drug dealers ...i mean band. ..of their time..
Not only did they steal a Mercury Award, they also made the worst speech ever heard by both man, woman, antelope and bear.
They have talent... don't get me wrong. They''re better than me by far. But you may as well call all new young music the arctic monkeys because everything is starting to sound the same. My tone may be very ... erm.. abusive at this time as.. yes.. the Arctic Jonkeys won Mercury Award 2006. Why? WHY? WHHHHHHY? boo the fuck hoo...
anyway.. .. what do y'all think of these charming lads...

I really, really like about four of their songs and the rest are rubbish, in my opinion.

Isnt the Mecury prize for 'outstanding contributions' and stuff like that? I find it odd a 'new' band should be awarded such a prestigius award really.

it seems like the mercury prize generally goes to more obscure artists, i thought that would be the only way muse would lose out, not to the arctic monkeys, i didnt really think they stood a chance!

muse were up against:
Hot shit
Arctic Jonkeys
Thom Dork
The Guilliewots?
Isabel Lanky and Mark Camp
Lou Who?
Richard Bawlding
Shitty Politti
Zoe biggums....
Out of all of those, i have to say the big gums would have got my vote... but not the jonkeys...i just don't understand what these amateur artists have contributed. All their songs sound the same and they won through popular demand. End of. It was a popularity contest and it just gets me soooooooooo wound up.. i've become a miserable git because of it.. GRRR! ok .. i think i'm over it now *sniff*
Mardy Bum is in fact a favourite song of mine. But then all the others sound the same.. Their music is average. It just brings even more chavs to reading... Thanks Arctics...

While I don't like them, they are amazing live (Leeds festival) and they have my respect on that point.
They just don't make the kind of music I like.

Their music is alright. Fairly average to my ears. But what has made me hate them is that stupid speech!!

Their lyrics are above the average pop stuff;they are decent live, as opposed to truly exciting in the way that Muse are;they're a particularly clever one-trick pony;the Mercury Prize is beneath a band of Muse's current standing and reputation, which is why they took little genuine interest in it;Muse are too 'big' now for events of this nature - it's hardly been mentioned, but judging by festival schedules in recent times, Muse are now seen as natural headliners whereas the much-hyped 'household names' Franz Ferdinand and Arctic Monkeys are not deemed to be capable of headlining the bigger festivals, so the 'fact' is that despite Muse's lower media profile, they are the biggest band in the UK right now.

This trio are one of the UK's most popular rock acts of the moment. This album debuted at #1 on the UK album chart.

...From the Mercury Awards Nominations and... from NME believe it or not!

Space-rock heroes look forward to award announcement
Muse have revealed that their hopes are high for tomorrow's Mercury Music Prize announcement (September 5).
The band's Number One album 'Black Holes and Revelations' is up against heavyweights including Arctic Monkeys and Thom Yorke for the prestigious award.
And while Muse traditionally shun the trappings of showbiz, bass player Chris Wolstenholme told MTV that this is an award they wouldn't mind winning.
He said: "The thing that's great about the Mercury is that it's based on how good you are rather than how many records you've sold. For the past few years it's been smaller acts who've taken the prize so maybe it's time a well-known name did it again."
But Wolstenholme admitted that the album's success could count against their chances: "Although saying that, you do win a cash prize so even though we'd love to get it, maybe it's fairer if it does go to a smaller act - we don't need the cash that badly right now."

To be honest, the Mercury Prize would never get the publicity it does if it didn't include well-known bands as nominees...yet they almost always give the prize to relative unknowns in what is viewed by some as 'shock, maverick decisions'...hmmm.
In point of fact, the winning of the prize made little difference to the career of Franz Ferdinand et al - if anything, they're less popular now, and the hype has receded.
The Arctics are a decent band, but as I wrote earlier, they are sadly a 'one-trick pony' - how can they progress musically, if they progress at all - Alex alone with a piano, ballad-style? The implementation of brass (one can hardly imagine the Monkeys with a string section)?? With their style of music, there's very little hope of them branching out, musically...so I think they've already reached their peak and are rather stuck in a rut of their own making, just like Oasis - there's nowhere for them to go but 'round in circles...

Steve .. You can go and freeze your bum!!!
.. and I mean that in the best possible way! hehe!
I beg to differ about the Autistic Junkies or whatever they're called!
I think Alex and co 've got loads of potential and they WILL branch out in the future. They've already proved it with tracks like 'Vampires' etc ..
Alex in particular is a very very good song writer and I don't see his talents going under a bushel anytime soon with the Monkeys or any other group.
