York is famous for being one of the most haunted cities in the world eeek! we have a really beautiful Minster, very old and falling to bits now!

Dick Turpin was apparently hanged and buried here too, its a walled city,. very old and very historical

I'd say second best

Well mine is famous for:

Vauxhall
The Airport which even has its own TV show
Serial Rapists
Terroists who set of the 7/7 bombings in London
A heck load of Polish immigrants

For uni:

most haunted place in Britain

yeah karen, that street is amazing, its called the shambles, and i think maybe its because the whole street doesnt make any sense, its just so higgledy piggledy but very quaint, and it really is like stepping back in time, apparently in some of the houses if two people stand in opposite bedrooms, they can lean out of the window and actually touch hands!! the houses are that close!!

Yeah, the castle is a bit creepy really, but its hollow inside, just a ruin really, well preserved though and the hill around it is cool for rolling down

ooh tasheh, your town is famous for serial rapists?? and the 7/7 terrorists?
Ham of the Problematique

The only thing that Essex is famous for are CHAVS, for which I am not proud.

Yes indeed there were about 3 on the loose at one point. All in jail now of course

And yes the terroists got on the train at Luton, that place was bordered off for days after that, they found a bomb left in a car
wildflower

oh god thats terrible, i bet it was scary when the rapists were on the loose, i was a teenager when the Yorkshire Ripper was about (yeah yeah, im ancient ) and he sent a tape to the police saying he would strike next in a walled city, we were all convinced he would come here, i used to carry a little spud knife up my sleeve at all times, and a lighted cigarette, just a good job no one ever tried to ask me the time hehe! id be banged up right along side the ripper now

I forgot to mention the city of my birth, and the most beautiful in the world:

Edinburgh.

However, Edinburgh is not beautiful based on the fact I was born there, I'm on about the architecture and the sheer wonderfulness of the place! I left 27 years ago and I miss it.
Northern-Star

Also, The notorious Lord Lucan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_lucan , although it doesn't actually mention it in the wiki, but the title Earl of Lucan is from my town
Helen

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nottingham

Obviously Robin Hood, though some would say he is from elsewhere.

Brian Clough - he used to go in the beer off near my friends house!

I think Notts COuntry FC is one of the oldest football clubs

The University of Nottingham

probs other stuff too
Northern-Star

those caves sound cool! Helen
ashentara

my hometown is famous for the ugliness of its buildings, all destroyed during WWII, and thus rebuilt in grey and stuff, very depressing.
It's also famous for its harbour, which is a great place to just walk or watch some beautiful ships anchored there.
Apart from that.. I think it's famous amongst students for the "night life".
People are very lively and friendly, as a girl you can go have a drink in any bar and you won't be bothered, stuff like that.

you forgot Rock City, the best venue in the world!

I also got seriously drunk in Nottingham once and felt so shit I thought it seemed totally logical to sleep on the bathroom floor next to the toilet with a hand towel covering me for warmth. God bless my student days

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consett

Consett is famous for its steel, which was used to build the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Eiffel Tower.

Rowan Atkinson was born in the same hospital I was born in (Shotley Bridge). quite a few years apart though. :p

Consett is also the 2nd highest market town in Britain (after Alston)

wildflower

my town is famous for its ghosties hehe, apparently one of the most haunted in the world, and its beautiful bar walls and Minster, also its famous for Dame Judi Dench, who went to school with my mum, my claim to fame
mr_x

Oh yeah.. I forgot... Consett is the home of Phleas Fogg crisps.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phileas_Fogg_snacks

Strangely though, I've never seen a packet of Phileas Fogg crisps anywhere in Consett yet when I've been elsewhere in the country I have seen them!
StarlightInTheGloom

Urm...I'm struggling to think of anything tamworth is famous for...other than the whole heather tell thing, which is quite depressing...so seeing as i'm half brummie, i'll switch to birmingham

- Home of Birmingham City Football Club - The best team in England! (Well not technically, but i say they are   )
- Ozzy Osbourne was born there
- UB40 (Oh dear..) are from there...
- J.R.R Tolkien was brought up in Birmingham
- It housed the main factory that built spitfires in WW2

Ooooh! I know some (sort of) famous things about tamworth...

- It is one of only two places in britain to have an indoor snow slope...with real snow and it was the first one in Britain
- Prince Charles visited once...haha
- We have Drayton Manor Theme Park - And apparently shockwave is Europes biggest stand up rollercoaster (although i reckon thats a load of bull cause that means someone had to visit every theme park in Europe!)
