i think what i like about them most is their amazing ability to tell a story, all their albums have been mostly conceptual, and while on their own the lyrics might not mean all that much, when read, and listened to as part of any of their albums you then see how deep they are, maybe thats what muse like about them too, Matt has always said how much he loves story telling in music, like Tom Waits etc, they are the jackanory of the music world

whispers: Silverchair maybe?
Ok I know there aren't many fans of Silverchair over here, but let me give you my opinion as a fan. I think technically speaking, Muse own Silverchair, totally. Matt's guitar and piano playing is way better than Dan's. Dan however is a better singer in my opinion, he can go just as high as Matt, and very much lower too. He can sing like and angel and the next minute bellow lyrics in a deep, rough, sexy voice.
And lyrically... they're one step above, really. Dan's lyrics (coz he's the only one writing them) are always deep, or weird, or poetic... I mean most songs make you think, try to understand what he meant, or just make your mind wander.
Live both bands are equal IMO. Silverchair aren't as big as Muse, when it comes to lights and show and stuff, but their gigs are always huge.
Just my two cents. _________________

I feel I need to add (double post, oops, shoot me) that i love both bands equally, but for different reasons. Muse is and always will be my favourite live band.
Silverchair, well I have never seen them live except on DVDs and stuff, but they're the band I listen to all the time at home, on my iPod, etc... _________________

well as you know Manu, i love Silverchair, i cant even remember how many times ive seen them live! more than 7 though! i love daniels voice, i think it improved as he got older, i used to think that he held his notes far too long hehe! but for me Neon Ballroom is the most chillingly beautiful, thought provoking album ive ever heard! Ana's song (daniel used to be anorexic) used to have me in tears, while black tangled heart made me realize how dark his perception of love was! seriously, if you ever get a chance to listen to this album, its just a classic! its even got David Heffgot (sp?) playing piano on Emotion sickness! in fact i have to go and listen to that album right now cheery ho _________________

yeah his voice either improved or he learned how to use all its potential. I think he's just got the sexiest voice :p
but yeah, I agree Neon Ballroom is a gem too. Ana's song.. well one of my best friends has been struggling anorexia for years and this song always strikes a chord in me. Black tangled heart is one of my favourites lyrics wise.
And of course Emotion sickness is my #1 Chair song...
have you seen the Sao Paulo version of it? Chillingly beautiful. Neon Ballroom is very often on my stereo..
But you should try to listen to the new album Carroll, honestly. There are real gems on it. _________________

For those interested/curious
here are the lyrics to Black tangled heart. Dark, beautiful song.
Maybe your luck has changed
Settle down
Maybe I'm just deranged
And on the rebound
Maybe love was the thing
Holding me back from all
Maybe I'm just the thing
To break my own fall
Take the rope to my heart and fall
You may just be the last before you
See the black tangled heart fall
Maybe departure's good
Makes room for more
Start to mass produce
For a chance to ignore
Maybe you'll kill yourself
Before I get a turn
Maybe I'll fall in love
And never know
Take the rope to my heart and fall
You may just be the last before you
See the black tangled heart fall
Take the rope to my heart and fall
You may just be the last before you
See the black tangled heart fall _________________

Hmmm.. yes.. I guess we just react differently to songs..
From what I see most of you like Muse for the technical side of things which is fine as do I but that is just one of many reasons why I love this band and you of course have other favourite bands to back you up, whereas I find it difficult to hang onto certain bands..
I like this discussion too this would not have turned out pretty in muse.mu  _________________ London Earl's Court 19/12/04

aww Tash, just enjoy muse for the reasons YOU enjoy them, we dont have to pick apart why something moves us, im just really thankful that in this ugly world there is still something as beautiful as music to restore some faith, in whatever shape or form it comes in yeah, i think for me thats one of the reasons that i dont go to MU, youre not allowed to have your own opinion without people slagging you off or laughing at you, thats not what music is about to me, so i like to stay here, cause we can disagree til the cows come home but still be nice to each other!
Manu, i got goose bumps just reading those lyrics! its the way he sings them though too! he has such passion in his voice, i love it when he goes from soft to gravelly to gentle and vulnerable, aww, im so glad hes happy and healthy now! hooray for Natalie Imbruglia hehe! Yeah, im gonna listen to the new album, maybe i can get a chance today! _________________

I agree, it's both hard and useless to try and find why we love certain bands. I guess it's a matter of taste, end of. Some bands will appeal to us, others won't ever, no matter how hard we try but I did manage to convert quite a few people to both Muse and Silverchair mwahahahaha
Carroll: if you want me to send you the album, I can
yeah I'd say hurray for Nat too, she seemed to have played a big role in his recovery. Though I heard that their marriage was in rocky waters these days. Hmmmm.
Tashie: bringing that kind of discussion to Muse.mu? interesting idea indeed. Let's just be prepared for the onslaught of attacks/slagging off/name calling (laughs at the thought). Silverchair's official board is the same. Don't even try to say that another band is equally good or (god forbid!) even better if you want to stay alive lol _________________

i have the new album thanks Manu, just havent got around to listening to it yet! im terrible!! ill post when ive listened to it :-)
aww i hope that they dont split up, they seem perfect for each other! i must admit though ive seen her in the newspapers here, and shes always alone, maybe they just dont take his picture as hes not well known here, but i dunno, they kind of portray her as single!! _________________
